Hawthorne (Nathaniel) is born in Salem.

July 4, 1804

The son of Nathaniel and Elizabeth (Manning) Hawthorne, Nathaniel Hawthorne attends Bowdoin College, moves to Boston in 1839 to work for port collector George Bancroft at the Custom House, and lives initially a boarding house at 53 Hancock Street. He marries Sophia Peabody in 1842,* moves to Concord, and becomes a well-known writer of fiction in 1850.* After writing a campaign biography of Franklin Pierce, Hawthorne serves as U.S. Consul at Liverpool (1853-1857). He dies in Plymouth, New Hampshire on May 19, 1864, and is buried in Sleepy Hollow Cemetery in Concord.
